Fire Prevention Self Inspection Checklist

  1. EXTERIOR AND SITE SAFETY

  2. Address number visible from street?*

  3. Address numbers are minimum of 6" in height and contrasting colors?*

  4. Rear tenant doors identified from outside (name and numbers)?*

  5. Doors blocked from the interior labeled as "NO INTERIOR ACCESS"?*

  6. Approved Fire Lanes marked, maintained and unobstructed (no parking or storage)?*

  7. Fire Hydrants visible and unobstructed (36" clearance)?*

  8. FDC (Fire Department Connection) unobstructed?*

  9. Dumpsters over 1.5 cubic yds. are minimum 5' away from combustible exterior walls, openings and projections?*

  10. KNOX Box keys up to date?*

  11. EGRESS, LIGHTING AND EXITS

  12. Sufficient ambient lighting is provided for safe movement to exits?*

  13. Emergency Exit Sign lights operate under battery power?*

  14. All EXIT signs illuminated under normal conditions and with automatic backup power?*

  15. All Marked EXIT doors must remain accessible, clear of obstructions with proper handles, panic hardware locks etc? Slide bolts are not approved.*

  16. Are there any additional fortifications that prevents egress?*

  17. Are EXIT doors unlocked when building is occupied?*

  18. EXIT doors concealed by curtains, drapes, mirrors, decorations or other materials?*

  19. Means of egress are unobstructed?*

  20. Minimum width of exit aisle is 36"?*

    Exit aisle width may be required to be larger based on occupant load

  21. All doors operate easily from the inside (egress side) without the use of a key, special knowledge and/or effort?*

  22. STORAGE AND HOUSEKEEPING

  23. Furnace, Electrical and/or Boiler room have storage?*

  24. Storage is minimum at 36" clearance around the heating sources?*

  25. Are oily rags or similar items stored in proper metal containers?*

  26. Combustible decorations are limited to the building design classification?*

    Any changes or additions shall be evaluated by Canton Fire Department prior to installation

  27. Maximum height of storage is 24" below the ceiling height and 18" from the sprinkler deflector?*

  28. Flammable and/or combustible liquids in excess of 10 gal. must be stored in liquid storage cabinets *

    (Class 1A, 1B, 1C, II, IIIA, IIIB)

  29. Flammable and/or combustible liquids are stored in accordance with IFC2015 Table 3404.3.4.1(Group M) and IFC2015 2703.1.1(1) (all other occupancies)?*

    Class 1A, 1B, 1C, II, IIIA, IIIB

  30. Class 1 liquids are stored in basements if under the max. qty. and sprinkled. Class II and IIIA are stored but must be sprinkled?*

    Class 1A, 1B, 1C, II, IIIA, IIIB. No storage if not sprinkled.

  31. Gasoline is stored in metal cans only?*

    No plastic gas cans

  32. ELECTRICAL SAFETY

  33. There is 36" clearance from all electrical equipment (panels, disconnect switches, transformers etc.)*

  34. Extension cords shall not be used to provide a permanent wiring solution. Extension cords are permitted to extend temporary power to a single device. Extension cords may not extend through walls, ceiling, under doors and must be plugged into an approved receptacle.*

  35. There are open junction boxes, open wire splices, missing outlet covers and openings in the electrical panel? They are considered to be electrical hazards and are not permitted.*

  36. Are there any multi-plug adapters except those with a built-in circuit breaker that are used to protect computers or related equipment?*

  37. GENERAL SAFETY

  38. Per Canton Township ordinance, is Certificate of Occupancy posted in a conspicuous location, near the main exit or exit access doorway from the building or tenant space?*

  39. Are all penetrations ceilings, floors and walls sealed?*

  40. Fire doors are not blocked and can positively latch?*

  41. Are ceiling tiles in place?*

  42. Doors leading to electrical rooms, fire protection systems, hazardous material storage etc, are labeled? Letters height is min. 2"*

  43. Are portable space heaters listed, plugged directly into an approved outlet and not used in I-2 facilities?*

    Only use heaters that have tip-over protection

  44. Are dryer vents and laundry areas free of lint and debris accumulation?*

  45. Generators are serviced, maintained and tested in accordance with their manufacturer recommendations?*

  46. Keys for elevator/s are provided in location approved by Canton Township Fire Department?*

  47. FIRE EXTINGUISHERS

  48. Fire Extinguishers serviced and tagged annually by an outside company? If the Fire Extinguisher is newly purchase, please provide proof of purchase.*

  49. Fire Extinguishers are visible, accessible, unobstructed and hanging on the wall?*

  50. Max. travel between Fire Extinguishers is 75?*

  51. COMMERCIAL KITCHENS

  52. Hood Suppression System is inspected semiannually and all the deficiencies are repaired?*

  53. Hood Suppression System inspection record submitted in IROL?*

  54. Kitchen Hood cleaned as per required frequency and documented?*

  55. FIRE PROTECTION SYSTEMS

  56. Automatic Sprinkler Systems are inspected annually and all the deficiencies are repaired?*

  57. Sprinkler System inspection record submitted in IROL?*

    If not, contact Canton Township Fire Prevention for more info on IROL submissions

  58. Fire Alarm and Fire Detection Systems are inspected annually and all the deficiencies are repaired?*

  59. Fire Alarm and Fire Detection System inspection record submitted in IROL?*

  60. Specialty Fire Suppression Systems like CO2, Clean Agent, Dry Chem are inspected semiannually and all the deficiencies are repaired?*

  62. By completing and submitting this Fire and Life Safety Self-Inspection, i am stating that all of this has been checked. I understand that a Canton Township Fire Inspector will follow up and that in-person fire inspection may be required
