3rd Annual Family Field Day

4th Annual Family Field Day & Movie Featuring "Despicable Me 3"

Area families are invited to come on out for a little friendly competition in  Heritage Park on Friday, August 10, at 7 p.m.  All ages can participate in our Family Field Day, featuring events such as old favorites like potato sack races, shoe kicks, and the distance throw. No pre-registration required. The $12 per family fee must be paid on-site; cash only, please. Following the Family Field Day, participants can take in Despicable Me 3 (Rated PG) in the park on the big screen. Food, snacks, and popcorn will also be available for purchase on site. Michigan Shakespeare Festival

Last Call for Entries for the Canton Fine Arts Exhibition

Area artists are encouraged to enter the 26th Annual Canton Fine Arts Exhibition at The Village Theater at Cherry Hill by August 10, 2018, for consideration to be locally exhibited from October 2 –27, 2018.  Artists are invited to enter their sculpture, fine arts, photography, ceramics, wall-hangings and mixed media by the deadline. Participation is open to all artists 18 years and older, living or working in Michigan. Entry forms are now available online or artists may request an application form by calling The Village Theater at Cherry Hill at 734/394-5300.

Ushers Needed for New Season

The Village Theater at Cherry Hill is seeking new volunteer ushers for the 2018-19 theater season! If you have ever wanted to work at a Performing Arts Center, or have a passion for the Arts, now is your chance to get involved in your community. Sign up for one of the applicable training dates: 

  • Mandatory training for New Ushers: Saturday, August 18 at 9 a.m.
  • Training for returning ushers: Tuesday, August 14 at 6 p.m.

All volunteers must be 18 years or age or older and will undergo a background check.

Annual Cardboard Boat Race

Summit Cardboard Boat Races

There's still time to cast off and race toward victory in the 5th Annual Summit on the Park Championship Cardboard Boat Race, which will be held on Thursday, August 30, starting at 6 p.m.  Build your custom vessel no bigger than 5 1/2 feet wide by 10 feet long using only cardboard, Duct tape, and paint.  Then, line up your crew and enter to win!  Each boat will be timed individually. Register online or at the Summit front desk.  Cardboard Boat Race event fees are:  $10 for Summit Members; $15 for Canton Residents; and $20 for Non-Residents.  Awards will be given for the Most Creative and Fastest Boat, as well as the best Titanic. Struggling to find building materials?  Join us on Wednesday, August 29 from 5-7 p.m., for a special building session where a $12 materials fee will get you 3 rolls of Duct tape and cardboard. Be sure to stop by the Canton Farmers Market and show your support for our local farmers and vendors!  Located at 500 N. Ridge Rd., the Farmers Market takes place every Sunday from 9 am – 1 pm rain or shine, until October 14.

This family-friendly market offers a wide variety of produce, foods, handmade items, and more.  The Market also offers weekly cooking demos, live entertainment, kids’ crafts, as well as Master Gardener seasonal topics. Plus, the Recreation Station Bouncer will be onsite August 5 and 19 (weather permitting).  In addition, a Canton Public Library Story Time will be held on August 5.  The popular Music with Ms. Carissa returns on August 26. This season’s entertainment is generously sponsored by Community Financial Credit Union.  August themes and special entertainment include:

  • August 5 - Beat the Heat. Cool down with some family friendly water games!
  • August 12 – Baseball Fans Day. Special activities involving America’s pastime!

Nine, Wine and Dine at Pheasant Run Golf Club

Couples can enjoy a special evening golf and dinner on Friday, August 24 at Pheasant Run Golf Club, located at 46500 Summit Parkway.  This event will start at 5:30 p.m. with shotgun start.  Couples will first compete in a 9-hole scramble as partners and after finishing their round, will be treated to a gourmet dinner with unique wine pairings. Prizes will also be awarded. This fun evening of golf and dining is just $130 per couple and is limited to the first 24 teams, so register today at the PRGC Pro-shop or by calling 734/397-6460.

The B.L.O.C.K. Youth and Teen Center Gears Up for Fall

Canton’s popular After School Program offers a supervised, fun environment for teens ages 11-17, that includes: daily programming, tutoring, outreach, and recreation opportunities. Transportation services are also available.  This unique teen center encourages teens to gain hands-on experience with activities such as Teen TV, cooking, music, art, youth and teen council, and much more. Third Annual Canton Senior Games

A wide variety of events has been scheduled for Seniors interested in competing in the Third Annual Canton Senior Games, which are scheduled to take place August 20-24.  Canton Club 55+ will offer a variety events in which seniors may compete in for a nominal fee for a chance to win in their age category.   

Events include:

Sports Tournaments (Golf, Pickleball, Tennis, Billiards)
Cards/Wii Games (Euchre, Pinochle, Will Bowling, Mahjong, Hand & Foot, Trivia)
Field Games (Bean Bag Toss, Bocce Ball, Ring Toss, Softball Throw, Basketball Shot, Football Toss) 
Competitions will take place throughout Canton at:  Pheasant Run Golf Club, Summit on the Park, Heritage Park, Freedom Park and Griffin Park.  Register online by August 10!  For additional information, call the Canton Club 55+ front desk at 734/394-5485.

Back to School Bash

Come celebrate Back to School Days at the Heritage Park Amphitheater on Saturday, August 25, from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. This free event, presented by Plymouth-Canton Community Schools and Canton Leisure Services will offer a variety of student performances and showcases. In addition, local schools and community groups, clubs, and area resource centers will be onsite providing valuable information to position your children for success in the coming school year. 9th Annual Brew, Brats & Bands at the Barn

This popular fall event returns to Preservation Park on Saturday, September 8 from 6-9 p.m. Ages 21 and over are encouraged to attend this special fundraiser that will benefit the Canton Historical Society.  This unique beer tasting event, scheduled to take place at the Cady-Boyer Barn located at 500 N. The latest edition of the Leisure Services Discover Brochure is now online and should have already arrived in your mailboxes.  Browse through it to find something just right for you and your family to take advantage of this fall and winter.  Canton residents & Summit members are encouraged to take advantage of our Early Bird discounts on designated classes with online registration at www.cantonfun.org starting on August 15 at 5 p.m. Walk-in and Non-resident registration begins on August 22 at 10 a.m.  Don't delay, as many classes fill up quickly.
