2nd Annual Family Field Day

Check out some of the exciting events coming up this month as we all try to squeeze the last bit of fun out of summer before it's back to school!

2nd Annual Family Field Day and Movie in the Park Featuring "The Good Dinosaur"

Area families are invited to come on out for a little friendly competition at the North end of Heritage Park on Friday, August 12, at 7 p.m.  All ages can participate in our Family Field Day featured events, such as old favorites like potato sack races, shoe kicks, three-legged races and wheelbarrow races. No pre-registration required. The $10 per family fee must be paid on-site; cash only. Following the Family Field Day, participants can take in Disney/Pixar’s “The Good Dinosaur” (Rated PG) in the park on the big screen. Food, snacks, and popcorn will also be available for purchase on site. Can’t make it to the Family Field Day?  Just come for the FREE movie at Dusk!  For more information, visit www.cantonfun.org.  

Annual Cardboard Boat Race

Summit Cardboard Boat Races

There's still time to cast off and race toward victory in the 2nd Annual Summit on the Park Championship Cardboard Boat Race, which will be held on Saturday, August 6, starting at 9:30 a.m.  Build your custom vessel no bigger than 5 1/2 feet wide by 10 feet long using only cardboard, duct tape and paint.  Then, line up your crew and enter to win!  Racing categories include: age groups 8 years and under, as well as 9 years of age and older.  Register online at www.summitonthepark.org  or at the Summit front desk.  Cardboard Boat Race event fees are:  $10 for Summit Members; $15 for Canton Residents; and $20 for Non-Residents.  For additional information and race rules, visit www.summitonthepark.org or call 734/394-5460. 

Sounds of Summer Music Series
Canton's popular Thursday Night Concert Series are winding down.  Be sure to check out some great entertainment in the Heritage Park Amphitheater during these last few FREE concerts.  Bring the whole family from 7:30 – 9:00 p.m. on August 4 & 11.  Joining us each week will be Crusin' Custom Coneys, Good Humor and Awesome Bounce! This concert series is generously sponsored in part by Community Financial Credit Union and Twisted Rooster.  Participants are encouraged to bring blankets or folding chairs and enjoy the concerts on the amphitheater lawn.
August 4:      Weekend Comeback – Hits from the 60s to today
August 11:    All Directions – Blues, Classic Motown and R&B
Concerts are weather-permitting. 

School House Rock Concert
There's one more chance to meet your friends and neighbors for an evening of music, food, and fun at a local elementary school. All ages are welcome to attend the August 10th concert featuring Rick Kelley starting at 6:30 p.m. at the Canton Historical Museum, located at 1022 S. Canton Center Road.  Don't miss the last chance to attend a concert in this special series of family-friendly performances this summer!

Last Call for Entries for the Canton Fine Arts Exhibition

Area artists are encouraged to enter the 24th Annual Canton Fine Arts Exhibition  by August 15, 2016 for consideration to be locally exhibited from September 30 – October 29, 2016, at The Village Theater at Cherry Hill.  Artists are invited to enter their sculptures, fine arts, photography, ceramics, wall-hangings and mixed media by the deadline. Participation is open to all artists 18 years and older, living or working in Michigan. 7th Annual Brew, Brats & Bands at the Barn

This popular fall event returns to Preservation Park on Saturday, September 10 from 6-9 p.m. Ages 21 and over are encouraged to attend this special fundraiser that will benefit the Canton Historical Society.  This unique beer tasting event, scheduled to take place at the Cady-Boyer Barn located at 500 N. Ridge Road, will include 7 beer tasting tickets to select from a wide variety of specialty craft beers, all-you-can-eat brats, and entertainment provided by "Dale Hicks Band" and “All Directions.”  Tickets are $25 in advance through September 4 and $30 at the door.  Sponsors of this popular event include: Canton Leisure Services, Holiday Market, Liberty Street Brewing Company, Canton Brew Works, and Beefests.com. The B.L.O.C.K. Youth and Teen Center Gears Up for Fall

Canton’s popular After School Program offers a supervised, fun environment for teens ages 11-17, that includes: daily programming, tutoring, outreach, and recreation opportunities. Transportation services are also available.  This unique teen center encourages teens to gain hands-on experience with activities such as Teen TV, cooking, music, art, youth and teen council, and much more. First Annual Canton Senior Games

A wide variety of events has been scheduled for Seniors interested in competing in the First Annual Canton Senior Games, which are scheduled to take place August 23-25.  Canton Club 55+ will offer a variety events in which seniors may compete in for a nominal fee for a chance to win in their age category.   
Events include:Sports Tournaments (Golf, Pickleball, Tennis, Billiards), Cards/Wii Games (Euchre, Pinochle, Will Bowling and the newly added Mahjong ), and Field Games (Bean Bag Toss, Bocce Ball, Frisbee Toss, Softball Throw, Basketball Shot, Soccer Kick, Football Toss)

On Saturday, August 27, Canton's Village Theater will be presenting a Pokémon Double Feature!  Starting at 7 p.m., Pokémon fans can enjoy 3 and 1/2 hours of Pokémon movies on the Big Screen.  Featured movies include: "Pokémon 2000" (1999) and "Pokémon 3" (2001) with a 15 minute intermission.  These rated G movies are perfect for all ages!  Tickets are just $10 each.  Get your tickets online now or at the door! Leisure Services Five Year Master Plan Public Hearing

The Canton Leisure Services Five Year Master Plan is currently available for public review and can also be found on the Canton website at www.cantonfun.org.  Hard copies of the Master Plan are also available for review at: Canton Public Library, 1200 S. Canton Center Road; Summit on the Park front desk, 46000 Summit Parkway; and Canton Leisure Services Administration Office, 1150 S. Canton Center Road.  All community comments can be submitted to Canton Leisure Services via email to leisure@canton-mi.org or else hand-delivered or mailed to 1150 S. Canton Center Road, Canton, MI  48188.  Presentation of the Five Year Master Plan Draft will be given to the Canton Township Board during a Public Hearing on Tuesday, September 27, 2016.  For additional information, call 734/394-5360.

The latest edition of the Leisure Services Discover Brochure is now online and will be hitting your mailboxes shortly.  Visit www.cantonfun.org to find something just right for you and your family to take advantage of.  Canton residents and Summit members are encouraged to take advantage of our Early Bird discounts on designated classes with online registration at www.cantonfun.org starting on August 17 at 5 p.m. Walk-in and Non-resident registration begins on August 24 at 12 p.m.  Don't delay, as many classes fill up quickly.
