Family Camp Out

So much is happening in Canton this summer! Check out some of the exciting events coming up this month as we celebrate National Parks & Recreation Month!

Family Camp-Out & Movie Night

Join us on Friday, July 15, as area families are invited to “camp out” overnight in Heritage Park and take in a movie under the stars, featuring Disney/Pixar's “Inside Out,” rated PG. Plenty of fun activities have been planned before the feature starting at 6 p.m., including: games, activities and entertainment for the entire family. In addition, dinner and concession items will be sold Friday evening.  To participate in this overnight activity, a $20 per tent fee must be paid on site. No advance reservation necessary. Campers and RV’s are also welcome. Please note, no electricity will be available. Set up begins at noon on Friday, July 15. For those not staying the night, there is a $5 per person fee to take part in the evening’s activities. Canoeing on Friday and a pancake breakfast on Saturday morning will be available for a nominal fee. 

Therapeutic Recreation's Sidewalk Chalk Contest

Sidewalk Chalk Contest Fundraiser

Help support the Canton Therapeutic Recreation Program by participating in a special Sidewalk Chalk Contest Fundraiser on Thursday, July 14, from 6:30-8:30 p.m. near the Heritage Park Amphitheater.  “New” Artists and “Experienced” Artists are encouraged to purchase a square to create a sidewalk chalk work of art during a Thursday Night Concert. Participants will have two hours to work on their square.  Pictures will be taken of each square and put on Facebook for voting. The square with the most “likes” will win a prize basket filled with Canton Leisure Services gear and two children’s tickets for Canton Leisure Services Trick or Treat Parade! A prize basket will be available for each category.  Participants must bring their own chalk and up to four people may work on a square.  The entry fee is $5 per square for pre-registration online. Register today! On-site registration fees will be $10 per square. In the event of inclement weather, the rain out date will be August 4 from 6:30-8:30 p.m. For more information, call 734/394-5460. 

Sounds of Summer Music Series
Canton's popular Thursday Night Concert Series returns to provide great entertainment in the Heritage Park Amphitheater all summer long.  Bring the whole family and enjoy these free concerts in park every Thursday evening from 7:30 – 9:00 p.m. now through August 11. Joining us each week will be Crusin' Custom Coneys, Good Humor and Awesome Bounce! This concert series is generously sponsored in part by Community Financial Credit Union and Twisted Rooster.  Participants are encouraged to bring blankets or folding chairs and enjoy the concerts on the amphitheater lawn.
July 7:          Wonder Boys – Blues and Classic Rock
July 14:         Steve King and the Dittilies –  Classic Rock and the Hottest Hits
July 21:         Gratitude Steel Band – Reggae, Classical, Hawaiian and more

Concerts are weather-permitting. 

School House Rock Concerts
Meet your friends and neighbors for an evening of music, food, and fun at our local elementary schools. All ages welcome and these concerts are free! Upcoming School House Rock Concerts include: July 13, featuring Ms. Carissa at the Canton Charter Academy; July 27, featuring Luau with Loretta and Friends at Schoolhouse Montessori and August 10, featuring Rick Kelley at the Canton Historical Museum.  Don't miss this family-friendly concerts in your neighborhoods this summer!

Shakespeare Festival

Michigan Shakespeare Festival Returns

The Village Theater at Cherry Hill is once again teaming up with the Michigan Shakespeare Festival to bring several special performances to Canton this summer.  From July 29 - August 14, the Michigan Shakespeare Festival will present its 2016 Season lineup at The Village Theater at Cherry Hill, located at 50400 Cherry Hill Road.  Performances will include: William Shakespeare’s “As You Like It," and “Richard II,” along with the Michigan theatrical premiere of Karen Tarjan's "The Killer Angels," based on the novel by Michael Shaara. Don’t miss these stellar productions, featuring respected and professional Equity Actors.  Get your tickets today!  For additional information, contact The Village Theater at 734/394-5300.

Yoga In the Park to Benefit Wounded Warrior Project

Join world-renowned speaker, Wounded Warrior, and Yoga teacher Dan Nevins as he leads an inspirational outdoor yoga session on Saturday, July 30 at 9 a.m. in Heritage Park. All proceeds from this event, sponsored by Old Glory Flags and Flagpoles of Livonia, MI and Canton Leisure Services, will go to benefit Wounded Warrior Project. Nevins credits the practice of yoga for turning his life around after losing his both legs in Iraq. Join him for this special yoga session in Heritage Park.  Tickets are $35 online and will be $45 the day of the event. Ticket price includes a Wounded Warrior Project yoga mat and carrying bag and Wounded Warrior support bracelet; while supplies last. Tickets are currently on sale now. Participants will receive a tax statement at the end of 2016 stating the portion of their donation that is tax deductible. Free Outdoor Fitness Classes
Get out and get moving during the summer months with the Summit on the Park’s free weekly outdoor fitness classes!  From now until August 26, individuals ages 14 and up can drop-in to these FREE outdoor fitness classes at the Heritage Park Amphitheater:  Walking Workout - Mondays at 10:30 a.m. for beginners and active older adults; Boot Camp – Wednesdays at 10:30 a.m. for all levels; and Yoga – Thursdays at 8:15 a.m. for all levels (please bring your Yoga mat).  Special evening Zumba sessions for all levels will be held on Tuesday, July 19 and August 16 at 6 p.m. All classes are weather permitting and absolutely no membership or registration is required for these FREE classes. Hydration is a must when it comes to outdoor fitness classes, so please remember your water bottle! Be sure to stop by the Canton Farmers Market and show your support for our local farmers and vendors!  Located at 500 N. Ridge Rd., the Farmers Market takes place every Sunday from 9 am – 1 pm rain or shine, until October 16.

This family-friendly market offers a wide variety of produce, foods, handmade items, and more.  Stop by this Sunday and discover something new!

3rd Annual Rally on Ridge at New Location
On Tuesday, July 26, 2016, area residents are invited to attend the Third Annual Rally on Ridge at Preservation Park, located at 500 N. Ridge Road, for a festive evening of food, fun, music, and more to benefit the Canton Farmers Market. Stop by from 6:30 – 8:30 p.m. to partake in local eats with friends, family, and neighbors and enjoy special activities for all ages. Join us for this special fundraiser that will feature several popular gourmet food trucks, live local musicians, and lawn games as well as children's activities at Cherry Hill School. This year’s entertainment is sponsored by the Regner Group of Edward Jones.  Come out for a great night featuring tasty food and plenty of summer fun to support the Canton Farmers Market! .

National Night Out Returns
The Canton community is invited to attend this year’s National Night Out featuring Canton’s Annual ‘Not In Our Town’ Community Peace Rally on Tuesday, August 2 from 6:30-8:30 p.m. in Heritage Park, located behind the Canton Administration building at 1150 S. Canton Center Road.  This community event, hosted by Canton Police Department, Canton Public Library, Canton Response to Hate Crime Coalition (CRHCC), and Canton Leisure Services will include activities such as: candlelight vigil, musical entertainment, guest speakers, refreshments, and children’s activities. All ages are invited to attend this free event promoting inclusion and tolerance that will celebrate Canton’s pride and appreciation of its diverse population.  For additional information, please visit www.cantonpublicsafety.org

First Annual Canton Senior Games

A wide variety of events has been scheduled for Seniors interested in competing in the First Annual Canton Senior Games, which are scheduled to take place August 23-25.  Canton Club 55+ will offer a variety events in which seniors may compete in for a nominal fee for a chance to win in their age category.   
Events include:Sports Tournaments (Golf, Pickleball, Tennis, Billiards), Cards/Wii Games (Euchre, Pinochle, Will Bowling), and Field Games (Bean Bag Toss, Bocce Ball, Frisbee Toss, Softball Throw, Basketball Shot, Soccer Kick, Football Toss) 
Competitions will take place throughout Canton at:  Pheasant Run Golf Club, Summit on the Park, Heritage Park, Freedom Park and Griffin Park.  Registration begins online at www.cantonfun.org July 11, 2016 for Canton Residents and July 18, 2016 for non-residents.  For additional information, call the Canton Club 55+ front desk at 734/394-5485. 

July is Family Golf Month at Pheasant Run Golf Club

All month long, bring your kids to Pheasant Run Golf Club and they can play for free!  One child 17 years of age and under can play for free with each paid adult. This offer is valid during the month of July on weekends and holidays after 5 p.m.

Need another reason to bring your children to the driving range this month?  Don’t miss ‘Bring Your Kids to the Range Month”.  During July, all kids 17 and under will receive a free medium bucket (50 balls) when a parent purchases a medium bucket. Pheasant Run Junior Golf Academy returns Wednesdays starting July 13 for five consecutive weeks providing lessons, range time, and 9 holes played on Pheasant Run’s North and South courses.  Junior golfers of all levels are welcome to join.  This popular course is just $249. Don’t miss these great opportunities to introduce your kids to the life-long benefits of the game of golf. Canton Dog Park Yappy Hour

Yappy Hour is a great opportunity to mingle with other dog lovers at the Dog Park. Snacks for 2 and 4-legged friends will be provided and there will be plenty of free giveaways! No pre-registration is necessary, however, Canton Dog Park membership is required. Yappy Hour Dates: July 23, and August 27 from 11 am - 12 pm.
