The hit musical Annie will be performed by Spotlight Players at the Village Theater at Cherry Hill in Canton April 27-29 and May 4-6, 2018.
Annie is based on the popular Harold Gray comic strip Little Orphan Annie. The original Broadway production opened in 1977 and ran nearly six years and won the Tony Awards for Best Musical and Best Original Score. The original run of Annie closed in November 1981, after 1485 performances. There continue to be many revivals around the world. Molly Ringwald starred as one of the orphans during a tour in 1978 in San Francisco. There have been 3 films produced in 1982, 1999 and 2014 featuring stars such as Carol Burnett, Kathy Bates, Jamie Foxx and Cameron Diaz.
Annie is a fiery young orphan girl who must live in a miserable orphanage run by the tyrannical Miss Hannigan. Her seemingly hopeless situation changes dramatically when she is selected to spend a short time at the residence of the wealthy industrialist, Oliver Warbucks. Annie charms the hearts of the household staff and even the seemingly cold-hearted Warbucks cannot help but learn to love this wonderful girl. He decides to help Annie find her long lost parents by offering a reward if they would come to him and prove their identity. However, Miss Hannigan, her evil brother, Rooster, and a female accomplice, plan to impersonate Annie’s parents to get the reward for themselves which places Annie in great danger.
Among others, here are a few songs audiences will enjoy: “Hard Knock Life”, “Tomorrow”, “Easy Street” and “I Don’t Need Anything But You”.
